What you might try doing is saving your template.
On the dashboard, where you can select "Template", copy all the html text and codes and simply paste it into a word document.
That might help with loss of your sidebar.
I am trying to contact another blogger who saves his blog for archival purposes (it's political, conservative, and therefore open to attacks and sabotage)...when he tells me how to do that, I'll get back to you.
He's lost posts in the past (because of server failure) and was able to retrieve them successfully.
